A short travel unit lets the crane approach the rail end, shrinking unusable space at the bay ends.
The simple construction makes wheel replacement much faster than on a double girder system.
Rail head wear and weld splices affect wheel profile selection; the track is measured and verified.
A single girder travel unit moves single girder overhead crane systems along the rail. Its compact construction works together with the light weight of the single girder.
On a single girder crane the total weight is markedly lower than on a double girder. The travel unit must be sized to match that lightness; fitting a group designed for a double girder to a single girder means unnecessary weight and cost.
The second benefit of a compact design is dead distance at the runway ends. The shorter the travel unit, the closer the crane can approach the end of the runway, and the smaller the unusable area at each end of the bay. In narrow bays that gain of a few metres is meaningful.
A simple construction shortens maintenance time directly. Wheels, gearbox and motor are in easily reached positions, and wheel replacement takes far less time than on a double girder system — which reduces planned downtime.
Where a crane is to be added to an existing runway, the rail profile, the distance between rail axes and the condition of the rail are measured. On older tracks, wear on the rail head and weld splices affect the choice of wheel profile.
Wheel diameter, rail profile, wheel pressure and duty class are determined together; the drive motor is selected against acceleration and braking values.
